Intuitive Controls Mod v1.04 for Dragon Age Origins

Summary

This mod overhauls the game controls and camera, allowing more fluid and intuitive gameplay. It is now feasible to play without frequent pauses or cumbersome camera adjustments.

Control Scheme

  • Moving the mouse now points the camera accordingly by default. This is more consistent with common FPS/RPG games. A crosshair indicates the current targeting position.
  • Clicking the Left Mouse Button selects the item at the crosshair. For finer control, hold down the button and move the mouse to a new target. When the button is released this new position is selected.
  • Clicking the Right Mouse Button activates the item at the crosshair. For finer control, hold down the button and move the mouse to a new target. When the button is released this new position is activated.
  • To override the new camera behavior momentarily, hold down the Left Shift key to enter Pointer Mode, allowing to move the pointer without changing the camera orientation. This is how it works by default in the original game, and is consistent with common RTS games. When the Shift key is released the game returns to the Default Mode. Combining quickslot keys with the new convenience features, it is possible to issue commands efficiently, making the Pause and Pointer Mode functions mostly optional.
  • Because of the new camera design, it is recommended to change the default Move left/right key bindings. Set Move left to A instead of Q, and Move right to D instead of E. The settings for Move camera left/right can remain blank, or they can be set to the now unused Q and E keys.
  • Note that if you use an Activated ability without an active target you need to select a new target to trigger it, using the Left Mouse Button as described above.
  • To highlight specific interactive objects, click or hold down the Left Mouse Button. To highlight all objects use the corresponding key binding (Tab by default).

Caveats

  • Since the mod uses the Left Shift key, if you assigned it to any key bindings they should be changed accordingly (to any other key).
  • The mod relies on the default Middle Mouse Button functionality. If you changed the default setting for Pan camera, reset it to Middle Mouse Button again.
  • Hiding the main interface disables the mod until it is displayed again.

Installing

  • Injectors/overlays (like Steam overlay or Origin overlay) may cause problems and are not supported. Disable them first.
  • Copy the files icmod.exe and d3d9.dll to the game bin_ship folder, where the file daorigins.exe is located.
  • A crosshair should appear in the game interface.

Uninstalling

Reverse the installation steps.

    1. That's intentional, as I warned in the intro post that it was discontinued. For some reason there were only about 2 players using it (as can be seen in the stats). It seems people are too stupid to appreciate this type of mod if given away for free.

    2. You know, it would be very helpful if you had uploaded your mod to popular modding sites such as nexusmods...

    3. It was in nexusmods, but each time I uploaded a new version it was causing the mod to be inaccessible due to file system problems related with AV false positives, so I stopped hosting the files there.

Then a "moderator" thought it was a good idea to delete the mod without warning since I didn't host the files there. Ultimately I was just tired of wasting time with it for nothing since only a few people showed interest and moved on.

  2. And now I can not download the mod? It is a pity(

  4. Hi NiftuCal, I'm here from your DAI mod video on YT. I was hoping you could share the old mod archives for DA:O and DA2 as you suggested. Thanks in advance.

    1. When I have some time I'll try to reinstall the games and update the mods to make them public. For those who don't want to wait it's better to send a message via the contact form so I know where to send the old archives.

  6. in some cases especially with the renewed interest in the DA trilogy, a lot more people ould really appreciate it :), I would love to have the mod for Origins as the camera in the base game is difficult to navigate, Mod if you like to and don't worry about the unappreciative :)

    1. I considered updating them, but have no plans to reinstall those games, so it will likely never happen. No disrespect to the few people who enjoyed my mods and were appreciative, but it's just not worth the work/trouble overall.

    1. Hi. I'm not sure about the licensing of some components for public availability, and I don't have much will to check and update the mod. The fact people left negative feedback when I disabled the links yet provided no feedback that could help others when they found it useful perfectly demonstrates why wasting time with this is like throwing pearls at pigs.

I usually made links available when someone sent a private message though, but it may take a long time to get a reply.

  8. I'm so sad you stopped supporting this mod! I just started playing Dragon Age for the first time and the camera controls are driving me nuts. Your mod sounds like the perfect fix. I'm sorry it was such a pain to support. :-(

    1. Not sure why the mod is getting so much interest now considering it was discontinued a long time ago and the game is very old, but I sent a link with the last version to the e-mail from your post.

    2. Could you send it to me as well, please?

    1. I'm not aware of recent game updates, but it should work with any version provided the changes don't affect the UI.

  11. Hey! The lack of interest was probably due to the complete unawareness about this mod. I was looking for the similar mod for ages (pun intended) and I discovered yours today by accident to find out that you deleted it. I understand your frustration, but now there is some hype spike about DAO prior to the new entry release so it maybe a great time to showcase your mod everywhere including twitter, etc.
Come on, give it a try! I will be happy to try your mod, it sounds very interesting to me : )

    1. I'll try to update it for public availability next month, since people seem to keep asking for it. Twitter popularity doesn't mean much to me since I don't have a social media presence, so I'll have to hire you as my PR manager :) Here's a temporary link with the last version meanwhile:

    2. Woow, it works even better than I expected! SO comfortable, thank you so much! Heh, sadly I dont use social media, except for seeing some rare news or announces, but I can clearly see how people manage to spread them there. Many new players find the PC controls of DAO overcomplicated and this mod is the way to make it more enjoyable.
Thank you once again for your awesome work and good luck with the update!

  12. Thank you so much sir for sharing this mod. I have Been facing problem with origins control holding right mouse to control camera however with this mod it works correctly kind of lile simlar to witcher 1. I wanted to ask I am trying to use steam to create control scheme for the controller for the game simlar to inquisition for controller. I have disabled steam overlay in game but still when opening the game through steam thr mod does not load. Is there anything can be done to fix this? Thank you so much again for sharing this again.

    1. Hi guys,
I finally had a chance to reinstall the game and updated the mod (better rendering, input processing and overlay compatibility). Tests look good and it will be available soon. This should improve compatibility a lot but I'm not sure if it will work with all control emulators and overlays, since they can make changes in unpredictable ways (e.g. variable loading order) and it would not be feasible to test all combinations.
